cans of 440 ml Draught Guinness beer (488
Kcals), etc. The increase in body fat leads
to changes in body shape. This is due to
the distribution of cells which store bodily
fat around the body.
Men, on the other hand, have the majority
of their fat cells located around their
abdominal area; where the fats are located
very close to the heart. The implication
is that of increased risk to coronary
heart disease. For this reason, allowable
body fat percentages of men are lower
when compared with those of women. These
distortions in body shape, due to fat
cells filling up, largely emanate as pear
or apple-shaped bodies. Typically, for
women, allowable fat percentages are expected
to be between 20% and less than 35% whereas,
for men, the allowable is between 10%
and less than 25%. As men predominantly
store their fats nearer to the heart,
it is imperative for men to maintain lower
fat levels all around (for instance, 17%)
in order to avoid coronary heart diseases.
Women, on the other hand, are expected
to maintain 27% as the ideal.
